After the fall of Ft. Sumter, President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers. All of the states of the North responded enthusiastically. While Northern troops traversed Baltimore they were attacked, and in the ensuing fight, both soldiers and Baltimore citizens were killed. For a period, Washington was cut off from further reinforcements.
